Of the 63 occupations listed in the BLS as needing a doctorate or professional degree, 20 were in the medical field (31.7%), 34 were in the higher education field (54%), and four were in the legal field (6.3%), while the rest of the jobs were in miscellaneous fields. Several facts stand out, both from the BLS data and this list. Any occupation that has “all other” in its name was omitted from the list, as these are typically groups of jobs and are not representative of a single profession. The BLS lists 63 occupations as requiring this type of education, and this story ranks them by the median annual wage in 2020, with ties being broken by each job’s 2019 employment. All of the jobs on this list require workers to have either a doctorate or a professional degree, which is usually an additional three to four years of schooling after receiving a bachelor’s degree.
StudySoup used 2020 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Employment Projections to compile a list of the 25 highest-paying occupations that require the most schooling. The cost of this additional education can be high, but many of the careers on this list offer great monetary and personal rewards. Not only do they need to earn college degrees, but many must go on to postgraduate work that is both rigorous and extensive. Doctors, lawyers, scientists, and teachers all require specialized training that prepares them for work in their fields.
